Vandervelden 135 Oude Geuze is a blend of 1-year-old lambic aged on foeders that were previously used for mainly red Brunello di Montalchino Tuscany wine and of 3-year-old lambic on an old Oud Beersel foeder.
Pours golden with a fading white head, huge carbonation that goes quite quickly out of the beer. Touch darker than usual lambiek orange. Nose is big on old lambiek funk, lots of old lambiek character, old barrels, musty old barrels,old raw, big hay, oak features massively. High carbonation instantly that changes really the taste, it quickly goes away, you kind of miss it when its gone, big rotting lemon taste, orange peel, lots of old lambiek taste, old lambiek funk, huge old barrel, musty barrel room, very rustic, spoiled lemon. Feels far older than it is quite interesting, bit simpler than it sounds, overal quite interesting beer with lots of musty funk, very interesting old lambiek profile. Pretty tasty, definitely better than the regular one, quite interesting good for the enthusiasts.
Beer of spontaneous fermentation, the Oude Mûre Tilquin à l’Ancienne is made from the fermentation of 350 gr of blackberries by liter of lambic. Unfiltered and unpasteurized, this beer is refermented in the bottle. Ingredients : water, malt, wheat, hops, blackberries.
Appearance is red purple, white head, hazy. Aroma is funky, sour, blackberries, barnyard, wonderful. Taste is funky, tart, sour, wonderful blackberry, barnyard, real good. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light crisp carbonation, funky blackberry aftertaste. Overall, really really solid.
Aroma has plenty of citrus, slight floral, slight horseblanked, sligtht grass. Pretty darn tasty. The taste tart and funky with some citrus, goose berries, basement grapefruit, stable, apples and some wood. Carbonation is extremely high. Nice indeed! Wow this is really complex.
3 Fonteinen Golden Doesjel is an assembly of 1,2 and 3 year old lambic. The popular term “doesjel” means doze off and refers to the secondary fermentation in the bottle that did not happen here. Doesjel has no foam and the authentic taste of lambic beer aged in oak barrels has a strong presence.
Clear golden with a white layer of head. Aromas of dust, cheesy funk, light mint and some rubber are what I could make out. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately to heavily acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately to heavily acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, no carbonation, lightly to moderately astringent. Lack of carbonation softens this considerably. Very enjoyable.
The Toer de Geuze was organised for the first time in 1997. Boon, De Cam, De Troch, 3 Fonteinen, Lindemans and Timmermans opened their doors for the public. Since then the open brewery day of the Payottenland and the Valley of the Senne has become a biannual event. The previous edition of the Toer de Geuze took place on 19th October 1997, 3rd October 1999, 22nd April 2001, 27th April 2003, 3rd April 2005, 22nd April 2007, 26th April 2009, 1st May 2011, 21st April 2013, and 3rd May 2015. This year, HORAL had again issued a Megablend. This old gueuze was especially made at the occasion of the Toer de Geuze 2015 and is a mixture of young and old lambic of 3 Fonteinen, Boon, De Oude Cam, De Troch, Hanssens, Lindemans, Oud Beersel, Tilquin en Timmermans.
Darkish red-amber color with a medium, quite firm and tanned, fading head. Tart, sweet and very fruity aroma – quite Flemish Sour –like and reasonably complex. Aroma is sweet fruity and some sourness. Flavor is sweet and fruity, some sourness and a malty finish. Taste is medium sweet with a funky fruitiness and a pleasant touch of toffee/caramel. ….
The world’s classic Gueuze. A blend of one, two, and three year-old lambics creates a second fermentation in the bottle. The « Champagne of Belgium !!
Slightly hazy orangy golden with small bubbly white head. Smaller head than I was expecting, gone in an instant. Nice visible carbonation. Effervescent and champagne-like pour.. Aroma is sour, apples, white wine, vinegar. Taste is sour, almost no sweetness and bitterness, tart, apples, white wine grapes, dry, crisp. Aftertaste is sour, touch of bitterness, smooth carbonation. Carbonation is strong but not overwhelming. Light sweet grains, unripe peach, lemons, lots of barely ripe fruit tart/bitter mix. Great example of style.
