Val-Dieu Cuvée Spéciale 800 ans 5.5°

 Val-Dieu Cuvée Spéciale 800 ans 5.5°

This historic event is being marked with the special release of Cuvée 800.
Brewed in the Cistercian Abbaye du Val-Dieu, Cuvée 800 is a special blond ale rich in authentic taste, roundness and complexity and also offers a subtle touch of hops. » Pours clear blonde, good white head. Smell is citrussy, yeast. Taste is fresh, bitter, very malty, mild citrus notes ( yet very clearly citrussy ) ok yeastyness, the scent mkes you expect way worse. Pretty ok in general. Bit sweet at the start maybe ( canfy-like aspects, pretty sure they’re from the hops ) but nothing really unbalanced.

Little cloudy, dark blond to light beige beer, creamy white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma has soapy citrus, some grainy notes and hints of apricot. Vleteren Bruin 12° Oak Barrel Aged

Vleteren Bruin 12° Oak Barrel Aged

A DREAM!!!

Pours a very dark brown coloured beer, with a light beige head on top, almost two fingers in size, thick enough, with average retention and light lacing left on the glass. Aroma is dried fruit, honeyed caramel, light grape and port notes, vanilla, dark rum soaked bread, drier barrel elements. Taste is caramel and fruity port, dark toffee, yeast and honey, spicy bitterness, finishing with light chocolate and brown sugar. Smooth, medium heavy body. Pretty nice.

Pours a translucent orange amber with a creamy off white head. Extremely lively beer, not just in the pour but throughout. Deep dark brown with a lasting head, it’s got the palate of a fizzy blonde. The aroma is very understated, with mild funk. While one expects a very rich dark fruit and spice profile from a Belgian winter, this one strikes me as almost a cross between Dupont’s Avec des Bon Voeux and a slightly tart Belgian black. The flavor is never allowed to move beyond fruity due to the high hop factor. The finish is bittered well yet balanced. Balance is it’s best attribute. Equinox inherently wants to go fruitbomb but the strict hop bittering wont let it. A superb brew with a refined disposition. Highly recommended.

Monsieur Rock 6.6°

Monsieur Rock 6.6°

A traditional beer made with modern techniques. Bottle fermentation and dry hopped beer. Bottle-fermented and dry-hopped, Monsieur Rock is a bottom-fermented beer brewed using traditional methods by Jean-Marie Rock, a master brewer with almost 40 years’ experience. Monsieur Rock is a blond beer with a 6.6% alcohol content. It is brewed using just 4 ingredients: Pilsner malt, aromatic hops, water, and a specially selected bottom-fermenting yeast. This very low-temperature, bottom-fermented beer is produced using the same methods as were used to make certain special beers more than 40 years ago, making it a traditional beer brewed using modern techniques. The fermenting period lasts for over a week, and the beer matures in the maturation tank at a low temperature in the presence of aromatic hops. A specific yeast strain is used for bottle fermentation.

183- Abbaye de Bonne Esperance beer – Brasserie Lefebvre

Available online at http://store.belgianshop.com/abbey-beers/936-abbaye-bonne-esperance-8-13l.html

Clear gold-brown colour and fine bubbled medium head. Delicate fragrant floral hops and faint chicken yard yeasty aromas. Medium to full bodied yeasty flavour. Balanced but a rather soft bitter-sweet palate with not that much jingling the oral nerve endings. Shortish, smooth, balanced finish. Best feature – aroma, poorest is the flavour
